Williams: A Town of Surprises and Hidden Treasures

I've always been intrigued by the lesser-known gems hidden in our vast landscapes, and Williams, a small town in Western Australia, is one such gem. It's a place that has captivated me with its ability to charm and surprise, offering a rich history and a unique experience that goes beyond its unassuming facade.

A Journey to Williams

My recent trip to Williams began early, with a breathtaking drive along the Pinjarra-Williams Road. The misty forests and rolling pastures set the tone for an adventure. As I entered the town, Brooking Street didn't initially reveal its secrets, but I knew better than to judge a town by its first impression.

Williams has a long history of deceiving travelers. Captain Thomas Bannister's expedition in 1831 discovered that the land was far more challenging than anticipated, and this spirit of surprise continues to this day.

A Town's Triumph

In May, Williams made headlines by winning the Keep Australia Beautiful National Tidy Towns Awards. This recognition is a testament to the town's vibrant community and its dedication to preserving its heritage and engaging its residents. Council Chair Elizabeth Carr described it as a "small but mighty town," and I couldn't agree more.

A Layered History

The town's history is deeply rooted, dating back to 1830 when Bannister blazed a trail through the region. The first settler, Joseph Strelley Harris, arrived soon after, and the town grew rapidly, becoming a vital stop on the Perth-Albany road. The military presence added to its importance, and the town's relocation to higher ground due to floods only added to its resilience.

The Williams Heritage Trail is a brilliant initiative, offering a glimpse into this rich history. It takes you past the Old Williams Cemetery, with its unmarked graves of ex-convicts, and the site of William Playle's blacksmith shop, now marked by a pomegranate tree. The agricultural hall, once an aircraft spotting station, is now an arts and crafts center, a beautiful transformation.

Beyond the Trail

Williams has more to offer than just its heritage trail. The Jesse Martin Museum, a private collection on a family farm, showcases the district's history with replica buildings and farm machinery. Lions Park provides a peaceful picnic spot, and the cycleway along the river offers a unique perspective. For wildlife enthusiasts, Dryandra Woodlands and Barna Mia nocturnal sanctuary are must-visits.

My personal favorite was the Holy Trinity Church, with its stunning stained-glass windows. It's a quiet, contemplative space that adds a touch of serenity to the town's vibrant history.

A Town's Appeal

Williams has an uncanny ability to entice visitors. I, like many others, initially saw it as a pit stop on the way to Albany, but its charm and surprises kept me engaged. As I made my way back to Perth, I realized I had only scratched the surface of this fascinating town.

Next year, Williams will host the national Tidy Towns Awards, and I have a feeling many visitors will discover, as I did, that Williams is more than just a stopover; it's a destination in its own right.
